I've always been fascinated by pictures of people enjoying life's finer things in unexpected places. Of course the worst examples can display ridiculous impracticality,
stubborn cultural arrogance,
or a blatant exploitation of power.
But the best of them remind us that treasured luxuries can make a special place even more special,
make hardship more bearable,
bring joy to dark days,
and offer a scrap of dignity and consolation in times of desolation.
And we can all do with a bit of that.
